Track Your Mileage in Real Time

Being aware of what your consumption looks like from tank-to-tank is vital, but that's really not enough. Being aware of what mileage you're getting in real time--having the ability to compare it to what you got or maybe 10 minutes ago--is the way. Ecomodding unites the love of saving money and adding gadgets. People with cars have it comparatively easy: All you need to do is throw some money and you are instantly instrumented. For cars, explore the world of DIY fuel-economy electronics, or you may have to acquire by installing a vacuum gauge, which measures how hard the engine is working, your knuckles dirty, such as the arduino-based MPGuino. Either way, a conscious mind combined with instant feedback should get you that 10 percent.

Use the Right Ride for the Job

It may seem like a no-brainer, but it might be the: Why choose a gas-guzzling SUV when a smaller, more efficient fuel-sipper is going to do to function? And you will not only save on gasoline, but also wear-and-tear on your vehicle, when carpooling or public transportation is an option.

Plan Your Route Ahead of Time

Take the route of least resistance. That is only with fewer stoplights, not as much traffic and, yes, lower speed limits. Even in case you conserve 0.1 gallons of gasoline each day, you are going to save more than $130 per year.

Brake When You Have to

I recently found myself battling against a 20-mile copy passing through Hartford, Conn.. The pack was speeding up and slowing down, although the traffic was. So I did something. When everybody started taking off, I gave myself a 10- or 15-second buffer prior to hastening and hitting on the gas. By leaving distance beforehand and accelerating, I could see the brake lights before I expended a significant quantity of gas, coasting right back up into the vehicle in front of me. My Honda would satisfy with the car without using the brakes, as it started up again when I timed it right. My gas mileage moved around over 70 mpg while sitting in traffic!
